STARTING A CAREER AS AN ETHICAL HACKER

By Phillip L. Wylie and Kim Crawley

I have been thinking for a while now, about what should be my next step in order to learn more about pentesting. Last year (2020) I was thinking about the OSCP (Offensive Security Certified Professional) - certification. I had read alot about certifications and what to do to learn more about cyber security, but the time went on and I did not feel ready for the OSCP.

My experience from the field comes from watching YouTube, doing some CTF's, some beginner machines at HackTheBox, some beginner level Python programming, and an introduction IT-study at It-fag.

In a moment of clearity I stumbled over this book - with the catchy title "The pentester blueprint - starting a career as an ethical hacker". I have now read through the book and got some pointers towards the next step. The book does not go into the depth of all the topics within cyber security. It explains some basic topics and definitions, and then gives you information about what you can do next. It has its own chapter about lectures and books that the writers recommend, and it also has a chapter regarding certifications you can take.

After reading about the certifications I was still very interested in the OSCP. The book also suggested the CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) - certification as a beginner certification. The next chapter suggested a book for studying for the CEH, named "CEH v10 Certified Ethical Hacker Study Guide". I have now ordered the book and I am looking forward to get to learn some more before finally register for an certification.

The book also touches down on the skills necessary for becoming a penetration tester, but also points out that diversity and experience from other industries is vital regarding your potential new path. I now feel confident about learning more and can recommend "The Pentester Blueprint". It might just give you a little nudge in the right direction!

I ordered it at Adlibris
You can also get it at Amazone
